CHS entrants excel at the Missoula State Music Festival with 100 Montana high schools present. CHS earned seven Superior ratings, five Excellent and six Good across solos and ensembles over a three day event. However some OCR glitches blur a few performer names and pieces.
At the May 7 Chateau city council meeting a permit was issued to R F Zion for a bowling alley on lots 13 and 14, block 11 in the East Addition. The council also approved a living room addition and picture window in the Methodist church parsonage, a wire fence and gate on vacant land west of the Quonset building along the Great Northern Railway right of way, and TV antenna permits to L E B Hallberg and Betty Hig.
Farmers may claim refunds of the 2 cent federal excise tax on gasoline used for farming under a 1956 law. First refunds cover the first half of 1956, with subsequent refunds for July 1 to June 30. Claims must be filed after June 30 and before October 1 using Form 230 with the district internal revenue office.
Public Health Nurse Betty J Higgins says Salk vaccine is available at the doctor’s office. Three shots can be given in seven months and are available to children age 1 to 14. Parents are urged to ensure their child has begun vaccination before polio season.
Mr and Mrs Bebh Grenberg and their daughter Anna Marie are on a vacation this week as reported by local observers. The family is seen at various tourist sites and engaging in leisure activities during their trip.
The 1955 Chateau High School baccalaureate in the auditorium May 20 at 8 p.m. features Rev. A Bernard Grandal delivering The Hinge of Life with Virginia McAuley on the processional and music by the Triple Trio. The 1955 commencement May 23 includes Rev. Gravdal, Miss McAuley, and Marie Vance with the Boys and Girls ensembles performing Nocturne and Born to Be Free as diplomas are presented. The class roll lists graduates including Bruce Anderson and Marie Vance.
N. C. Morton died in Pasco Washington on May 5. He was born in Canada and homesteaded in Montana from 1908 to 1996, led the first grain growers association between Shelby and the Canadian border about 1915, and moved to Seattle after the 1922 26 oil boom. Survived by wife Alice and two sons Keith of Tad and Aubrey of Seattle.
The 16th annual Whoop-up Trail Days celebration returns to Conrad on May 18 and 19. Co. F 163rd Armored Cavalry Regiment will march in the parade alongside a free chuck wagon breakfast, a Gymkhana at Sanders Field, and evening bingo at city hall.
County ASC chairman C. B. Turnbull announced that an ASC降 representative will inspect each wheat farm to determine acreage for price support and marketing quota. Inspectors seek farm cooperation, with operators signing the acreage report. Exceeding allotment triggers adjustments and possible penalties.
The Minneapolis firm of Piper, Jaffray and Hopwood won the $173,000 bond issue for a new Fairfield grade school. Their bid of 3 percent was accepted Monday night by District No. 21's school board. County Attorney Lee H. Murphy attended the meeting in official capacity.
In Magistrate J M Sulgrove court Leo Kotz paid 5 dollars for following too close. Richard W Allum paid 2 dollars for failing to observe a stop sign. Carl Larson paid 5 dollars for backing from the curb causing an accident. Chester Ferlick forfeited 25 dollar bond on violating safe driving. E C Beshear found guilty of third degree assault and fined 10 dollars. In Justice William Irwin court Harold C Clausen forfeited 10 dollars for failing to stop before entering a highway. Ronald Parkett received a five day suspended sentence for disturbing the peace. George Hammond served a five day jail sentence for lacking a valid license. Matt Guza fined 300 dollars for driving with revoked license, with two days in jail and a 30 day sentence suspended. Gunn had several prior convictions on similar charges.
Billy ONeill of Cut Bank visited over the weekend at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Monkman and Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Saterlie.
Forty Home Economics students under Mrs. Ragar staged their annual style show on May 9 at the high school auditorium. The centerpiece titled Mannequins at Midnight featured three living mannequins in a night store setting, with Diane Henderson as co-chair and Jeanne Rausch as chair. Ernest Copenhaver, Hinsdale coach and former principal of Chateau grade schools, resigns Hinsdale post to take the Joplin school head position this fall. He and his wife will summer at Dillon while he pursues a master’s degree at Western Montana College of Education.
Jim Lohse of the Chateau Bulldogs scored 24 points to top the local tally and place his team fifth in the Northern District track meet at Memorial Stadium Great Falls. Malta Edwards was second with 24 points while Shelby won the team title with 44 and a half points.
Jim Lohse, a CHS senior and Bulldog trackman, set four school records this season. Coach Charles Peck notes a fifth record by senior Gene Henneford who broke the broad jump mark with a 20 foot leap.
The Choteau Elementary School eighth grade class of 32 will graduate Thursday at 8:00 pm in the high school auditorium. Principal Robert Gormley said Reverend Grant Moore and George Eichhorn will present diplomas, with graduates delivering speeches in place of an adult speaker.
Chief Clyde Darby warns strict enforcement of the city dog license ordinance. About 100 dogs live in the city, only 26 are licensed. untagged dogs will be picked up. License fees are 2 dollars for male and spayed females, and 5 dollars for unspayed females.
Secretary Robert Crocker reported at the Chateau Chamber of Commerce meeting that Western Express and Helphrey Motor Freight have applied for a new hearing for a motor freight route through Choteau based on new evidence. The hearing will be held in Helena soon. The by-laws committee chaired by K. M. Bridenstine reported no progress. The chamber discussed its role in the July rodeo, but no action was taken. The American Legion will sponsor the event, with net proceeds aiding Choteau junior baseball teams.
Dean Babst attended a district welfare meeting in Great Falls on Tuesday. Guests at the Babst home included Mr. and Mrs. John Babst of Great Falls and Mrs. Babst's parents Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Wittaker of Stanford.
