Havre experiment station agronomist M A Bell led multi year trials on summer fallow to conserve moisture on dryland farms. Earlier plowing between May 5 and 25 increased wheat yields by five to six bushels, with oats and barley also benefitting. April plowing offered little yield gain and hindered weed control. Deep plowing showed little yield change.
