Montana County Office Consolidation Permissible by Law
Montana Attorney General Ji J Freebourn says county commissioners may consolidate any two or more enumerated county offices within six months before a general election. The ruling notes petition based consolidation under Section 4749.1 does not override the six month period when commissioners act on their own motion. It also says candidates for consolidated offices must meet both offices' qualifications.
