Road To Alder Gulch Shaped Early Montana Trails
A historic Salt Lake City to Alder Gulch route opened in 1863 to 1864, drawing thousands of prospectors and diverse travelers. The road passed Cahill’s ranch and Williams’ Creek, with the first Montana telegraph line following it. Early travelers included bullwhackers, muleskinners, agents, preachers, traders, and families in varied conveyances, from prairie schooners to high-wheeled wagons. The line later hosted trotting horses and cattle herds before modern automobiles revived the old route.
