Poppy Seed Potential Explored by Montana State College
Sam L. Sloan, extension agronomist at Montana State College, sees poppy seed production as promising enough for thorough field trials in typical Montana farming areas. Demand stems from wholesale bakers in the central northwest, with annual imports about 6 to 7 million pounds. Yields are projected at 700 to 900 pounds per acre, yielding $45 to $60 per acre, while costs resemble those of growing field beans. Domestically produced seed cannot fully replace imports, and Montana could support 4 000 to 5 000 acres if commercial production proves viable.
