Crops and ranges in Teton county suffer from scarce rain with only 0.15 inch in June so far and 1.03 inches in the last 34 days. Soil moisture remains alarmingly short east of the Continental Divide as farmers brace for continued drought and possible haying of winter wheat.

Magazine salesmen arrested for false pretenses in Teton county
Three magazine salesmen from Great Falls were arrested in the Teton canyon district west of Choteau for obtaining money under false pretenses. They claimed to aid Korean War veterans, but investigators found no supporting organization and the commissions went to the salesmen. Names include John D. Sullivan Jack Kewell and J Thornton. Customers cited include Mrs Ingeborg Graff and Medardus Posch. Sheriff A O Peterson handled the arrest and one night stay.

Moose Lodge Members Plan District Picnic and Softball Tourney
Choteau Moose lodge members and families will attend a district picnic and softball tournament Sunday at Birch Creek seven miles north of Dupuyer on the oiled road. Lodge governor George Morey asked Chateau families to meet at the Moose hall at 9 am to travel as a unit. Conrad, Cut Bank, and Shelby lodges will also attend. last Sunday’s picnic featured a German band directed by Dr. C. W. Boussard.

Magpie Drive Destroys Hundreds of Birds and Eggs
Teton county reports a magpie drive funded by youths yielding 192.91 in bounties. Rez Wearly wins top with 27.38, followed by Keith George 26.07 and Howard Truchot Jr 23.19. A total of 607 grown magpies 1785 young birds and 1889 eggs were killed at the stated cents per unit.

Groups Protest Tavern Site Before Council
A group of Methodist and Lutheran church members met with the city council to protest the Chateau beer and liquor store ordinance. The protest followed the transfer of a beer and liquor license to Wagon Wheel tavern, now near the State Liquor store in a residential area. The matter was taken under advisement.

IOOF Picnic Set For Sunday At Rieckhoff Ranch

Teton Saddle Club Second at District Meet in Fairfield
The Teton Saddle Club of Choteau finished second with 595 points at the TAGGS District O-Mok-See in Fairfield last Sunday. Simms Saddle Club led with 805 points, Great Falls took third, and Greenfield fourth. Individual event winners include Gretna Green, Jay Kirby, Ida Lauke, and others across cutting, barrel racing, water race, and pole bending.

Montana State University graduate Tom Ambrose of Eureka will edit the Choteau Acantha this summer, taking over duties from Jere Coffey until August. Winners Named in Poppy Poster Contest by American Legion
The Chateau unit of the American Legion auxiliary announced winners in the poppy poster contest. Class I winners were Harvey Lawson first Gene Bruno second and Sue Fraser third. The back foundation and rear wall of the Taylor Motor Company in Chateau were damaged last week after a ditch for a new city drainage sewer collapsed in the alley behind the building. L. E Taylor called the damage considerable and said rebuilding may be needed. Utility Builders of Great Falls are the drainage contractors.

Fifteen year old Nick D Pfieffer of Valier died last Saturday after slipping under the rear dual wheels of a truck driven by his stepfather Max Jacobson. The accident occurred as Pfieffer jumped from the truck to open a gate at Clara Lenoir’s ranch south of Valier while helping his stepfather and brother Keith Pfieffer to deliver three horses.

Square Dance Club Forms in City Park Pavilion
A large turnout at the park pavilion last Saturday night spurred the formation of a city square dance club at Chateau. Members are funded through November.
