Granville Stuart’s 1880 cattle range quest across Montana
In 1880 Granville Stuart led a land-hunt from Helena to Fort Custer and beyond seeking a summer range for his DHS cattle outfit. He studied Little Horn, Flatwillow, and Judith basin regions, finally settling on McDonald creek near Judith gap after meetings with Levire Hamblin and Red River half-breeds. The journey yielded notes on grass, water, timber, and potential oil indications while tracing early frontier routes and military postings.
