Arrival of John Chase in Choteau in 1890
John Chase arrived in Choteau in 1890 with a freighter carrying salt for Clark brothers of Gansman’s Coulee. He slept at the Chateau, found a wagon box for bedding, and sought work to learn sheep handling before switching to cattle. He homesteaded near Dupuyer, later accumulated 1800 acres, sold it in 1926, and moved to Helena, visiting periodically.
