A resident traveling toward Chateau near Farmington struck a single crow in flight after a dozen crows rose ahead. The bird died on the road, demonstrating even smart crows cannot outrun a vehicle traveling over fifty miles per hour.
The writer notes gulls and owls in nearby fields showing organized behavior. Gulls catch prey with precise moves, including a backward glide to snag a hopper. Owls appear in larger numbers, traveling in clusters across weeded areas, suggesting local avian patterns.
In Knees country 35 miles east of Brady a severe hailstorm and heavy rain caused extensive ruin in fields and debris everywhere. Men at a nearby schoolhouse noted the deluge and hailed as the worst yet seen in the region.
A weather observer notes nearly six inches of rain in about an hour flooding coulees and reservoirs. He cites extensive crop damage, only about 10 percent insured, and calls this the first destructive hailstorm in 13 years while reflecting on rain risks and economic choices.
A meeting of all business men is set for Friday at 8 o'clock in city hall to discuss staging a rodeo and celebration in Chateau on Labor Day. Past meeting had low turnout. organizers urge attendance to form committees and decide on arrangements.
Announcement states Glenloyd Hotel is sold by Mrs. Thompson to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Sweetman who were recently married. They will take possession Saturday July 15 and maintain the current policy serving both transients and residents. Purchase price not disclosed.

Three score Scouts from Chateau and nearby areas will begin five days of camping at Benchmark near Brackett's Ranch. Each Scout brings a tent and gear, food costs two dollars for the encampment, with adult leaders from each locality guiding the group. The local committee chaired by Gilbert Lee and Scoutmaster Bill Olsen invites parents and friends to visit during the weekend.
Chateau Woman's Club selects Saturday September 2 for its annual flower show to be held at the park pavilion. Flower show and tea committee led by Mrs Billings plans town canvass for premiums and donations. no raffle will be held this year.
County farms report widespread stress from a week of hot dry conditions with a peak of 97.5 in Choteau. Some rain fell in Choteau and Farmington, while winter wheat remains good. summer fallowing yields drop, and June precipitation trails the 49 year average across counties.
Mr and Mrs C O Davis have sold their Main avenue home and will open a second hand store in the building soon. The couple move out today and plan to take rooms in the Gorham block. Dr D H Cornell of Glencoe Ill arrived Tuesday to visit Dr E J Crary’s ranch and with his son in law and daughter Dr and Mrs L B Crary at Fairfield.
The hot dry weather has boosted grasshopper activity in the county, with hoppers reported from north and east Pow er and into the Collins area. Farmers are advised to inspect fields, as early kills reduce fall egg numbers, and the county agent offers free bait at Chateau with more stations to follow if needed.
Mrs R L Reickhoff departed last week for a month long visit to her former home in Iowa.
The Lions Club held a Tuesday night installation led by K. BeB Sturgis with Arnold Hanusa as new president. Officers include Hanusa, Monkman, McDonald, Taylor, Bloom, Jackson, and Nelson. directors and committees were named with plans for the North Montana State Fair and a men’s swimming class.
The annual all county home demonstration picnic will be in Chateau city park this Sunday July 16. It includes a pot luck lunch with two clubs eating together and a 2 pm program followed by various race events and attendance prizes. Registration closes at 2 pm and clubs from Greenfield Belleview to Pendroy form the organizing committees.
The Associated Merchants of Montana will hold a county meeting at the Chateau court house next Monday evening July 17 at 8 p m. Prof R C Lina of the University of Montana will discuss salesmanship with moving pictures and Marvin D Morrow will attend as field secretary. All county merchants and clerks are urged to attend.
Mrs EB J Carpenter of Power and her infant daughter were dismissed Tuesday. Harry Perkins of Choteau admitted Monday as medical patient. Charles Tumblin of Bynhm dismissed Wednesday. Choteau Hospital R Swain of Choteau admitted Monday as medical patient. E F Shearer of Augusta admitted Sunday with a broken jaw and dismissed Tuesday. Anita Louise Sackett admitted Wednesday as medical patient. Arnold Beck of Power admitted Wednesday night with lacerations to the right cheek from cranking an engine.
