Clerk of Court Halvor Daley reports June marriage licenses totaled eight, down from eleven a year earlier. In the past week, Laurence H. Tooley Jr. and M. Talifson wed in Bynum. Bill Bakker and Kathryn McDonald tied the knot on July 4. George D. Showman and Kathryn Hood obtained licenses July 5 and married the same day. Judge Hattersley will attend Friday’s court term for probate matters.
Teresa McGowan 15 sister of Father E J McGowan died Friday in Butte after an operation for acute appendicitis and a burst appendix causing peritonitis. Father McGowan rushed to Butte, funeral held Monday at Immaculate Conception parish with him presiding. Local friends extend sympathy.
Senator Wheeler states the Bureau of Reclamation will complete investigations on the Gallatin River Madison River Fort Peck Rock Creek projects in fiscal 1940 and initiate four new studies at Bitter Root Valley Canyon Ferry Reservoir Daley Spur Dam and Yellowstone Basin. He also helped secure funds to study supplying water to the Vaughn division of the Sun River project.
Montana counties and school districts will get shares from unearned premiums in the old state insurance fund. State Auditor John J. Holmes says total disbursement is 25 974 17 with counties to receive 7 994 54 and districts 17 979 63. Teton county's portion is 122 43.
A report claimed a man was stabbed and died from a brawl in Augusta after the July Fourth celebration. Sheriff Billings investigated and found only a drunken fight among several men of Indian blood with one injury. Those involved were jailed to cool off.
Fine weather over the holidays drew tremendous crowds to the Augusta rodeo and celebration held July 3 and 4. Reports from Choteau indicate the event was a complete success with many residents in attendance. Nearby residents vacationed at Glacier and Yellowstone Parks while others traveled for visits, leaving Augusta notably quiet afterward.
Manager Andy Nutter says Choteau will play a home game against Fairfield at 6 30 p m tomorrow. The next contest sends the locals to Fort Benton on Sunday. Last Sunday Choteau beat Augusta 19 to 4. A July 4th game with Augusta was canceled by them for obvious reasons.
The state public welfare board in late June allocated 39,176 to 18 counties for direct relief before fiscal year end. With about 318,000 available for general relief this year, the board plans 128,000 for a sewing room project and continued aid from federal surplus commodities.
Montana's liquor control system earned 610000 for the year to June 30. June profits totaled 199800 with 35000 from liquor excise tax. The teachers retirement fund received 4800 from monthly profit.

A frame building on Main Street in Conrad burned early Tuesday, gutting the structure that housed a barber shop, the City Meat Market, and lodge rooms for the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. The loss is estimated around 10 000 dollars. neighboring buildings housing Drake Drug Co post office and Gamble store escaped damage. The 1907 building, bought in 1924 by W Strecklin and Mrs William Eastman, was operated by barber John Pesputin and meat market owner Paul Chapdelaine.
