Flag That Inspired National Anthem 125th Birthday Celebration
The Star Spangled Banner flag from Fort McHenry remains a national relic at the National Museum. Baltimore widow Mary Young Pickersgill fashioned the 30 by 42 foot banner amid the 1814 bombardment. Her daughter Caroline helped, guided by Mrs. Young, and the flag bore four hundred yards of bunting. The flag was donated to the National Museum in 1912, and Baltimore and the nation plan September celebrations marking its 125th birthday.
