Montana Senator Thomas J. Carter pushes a Senate bill to issue 330 million in certificates of indebtedness to fund federal irrigation projects. Passage would allow completion of most current projects within three years, enabling water-right revenues to finance new districts. Defeat risks slow work and possible national setback.
The bill, backed by Senator Carter, advances in the Senate with unanimous support but faces strong opposition in the House. A general western demand, persuasive letters, and delegations to Washington are expected to push passage. If approved, Montana irrigation projects could proceed, funded by Treasury certificates paid from public land funds within five years.
The issue notes state land sales in Montana fetch high prices. The top appraisal is the south half of section 16, township 28 north, range 2 west, totaling 320 acres at 825 per acre. Law requires no sale below appraisal and sets a legal minimum of ten dollars per acre.
The passage notes the persistent dry spell attracting pessimists who forecast drought for farmers. It counters with optimism, predicting a dry April but hinting May and June will bring more moisture than desired.
The county team from our high school faces a tough Sunday evening debate. Jefferson will clearly learn that a debate is taking place, as the event advances with readiness and anticipation.
The note hints at the census taker starting work tomorrow and expressing doubt about human nature. It suggests a cautious view of people and forecasts a change in sentiment over the next month.
