Nuclear Energy World Salvation Reiterated by Weinberg
Nuclear energy plus population control can avert world hunger says Dr. Alvin Weinberg director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He argues energy is the key input to expand agricultural production and cites desalting the sea and the Green Revolution as costly but transformative. He compares nuclear energy to the Apollo program in cost and payoff and notes 100 large plants either built or ordered. Desalting and fertilizer production via nuclear energy are highlighted with examples from Israel and the Soviet Union. The piece links these ideas to potential major gains for food security and global welfare.
