U.S. command reports heavy fighting near Tay Ninh in four months. More than 400 enemy dead and seven Americans killed with 18 wounded. Attacks continued nearby as B52 strikes hit suspected concentrations north of Tay Ninh.
The army reports an UH1 helicopter was shot down by Communist ground fire near Xuan Loc, 35 miles northeast of Saigon, with the crew escaping injury. A weekly tally shows 21 helicopters destroyed that week, bringing total losses to 2,765.
Ken M. Fink of Childress died in Santa Monica California. He was born October 6 1935 and was valedictorian of Childress High School 1954. He studied at University of Texas and MIT graduating 1959, then worked for McDonnell Douglas. He was active in local scouts and First Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be held in Childress conducted by Newberry Funeral Home.
Mrs Beatrice Robinson will serve as president of the Business and Professional Women's Club along with new officers including Ann Carter as first vice president Hazel O Donnell as second vice president Christine Menefee as secretary and Alta Bennett as treasurer The group met at Miss Menefees home with several members hosting and guests from Dallas and plans for the hospital memorial program and state convention were discussed The next meeting will be at Mrs Stiner home on the second Thursday in July to avoid the Old Settlers celebration starting July 17
An American Party convention for Childress County will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday in the courthouse assembly room. Delegates are those who signed the precinct convention lists on May 4, 1968 and hold a current voter registration certificate. All delegates are urged to attend.
Governor Smith, after vetoing 50 bills, plans a statewide TV address at 7:30 p.m. to announce his stance on a 2.8 billion dollar one year budget and a 60.4 million dollar teacher pay bill. He may veto the budget while leaving the teacher pay measure undecided as observers expect.
Jim Heath of the Texas Industrial Commission told the Industrial Committee and Chamber directors that a town must prioritize its existing industry while pursuing new growth. He outlined a four phase TIC program and urged Childress to remodel downtown to stimulate business. Sam Carmack, Chamber president, presided at the meeting.
The SDS national convention in Chicago focuses on self criticism and factional rhetoric after dispatching security and publicity steps. Brown Berets and Black Panthers criticize SDS roles, while delegates react with cheers and jeers outside the Coliseum.
Larry L. Moore son of Mr and Mrs Bill Moore of Childress and a Childress High School graduate received the Distingu ished Student designation from Texas A M University for exceptional scholastic achievement in Spring Semester 1969. He is a Texas Highway Department summer employee and will be a sophomore next year.
Clint Williams Clint Murchison Sr a college dropout who became one of the wealthiest men in the United States died early today at age 74 His fortune was estimated at about half a billion dollars His holdings spanned oil gas railroads publishing fishing tackle groceries a newspaper drive in theaters candy and taxi firms He once controlled New York Central Railroad and held substantial Southern Pacific stock His health had been poor for years.
President Nixon said he may pursue other actions if current anti inflation measures do not take effect in two or three months. He noted budget cuts and taxes already ordered and urged Congress to extend the surcharge while credit controls stay in place. In another item Ecuadorian warships captured six tuna boats near Salinas including the Neptune, taking them to Salinas with guards aboard.
President Nixon said he hopes more than 200,000 American ground combat troops will be withdrawn from Vietnam by the end of 1970. He warned of a long road to peace, noted no response yet from Hanoi or the Viet Cong to the first 25,000 troop withdrawal, and urged cease-fire and internationally supervised elections.
A 22 year old man Robert Michniak stood atop a Pittsburgh bridge firing at police and boats below. After firing hundreds of shots he turned the weapon on himself as officers and spectators watched in disbelief.
A reported tornado touched down three and a half miles west of Lueders in Jones County Texas, flattening power lines and a farm house on the Jordan farm. No injuries were reported as thundershowers and large hail plagued Northwest and North Central Texas.
Ray Shade, veteran competitor, is expected to finish the Texas Water Safari this year marking a first. At noon he rested at Magnolia Bay eight miles from the finish as all boats halted for the day and will resume tomorrow. He reported rough water in San Antonio Bay with his boat overturning several times.
Texas leads the nation in hog cholera outbreaks as Don Brothers of Paducah, president of the Texas Pork Producers Association, spoke at Rolling Plains Producers Association. New laws could reduce cholera. next meeting will feature a free pork barbecue in Wellington on July 19. The 10 county BP group includes Cottle, Childress, Collingsworth, Hall, Wilbarger, Hardeman, Motley, King, Wichita, and Ford. The association seeks a Texas Park Queen nominee to compete in state and national contests. Carl Kent Black of Paducah presided. Bob Lewis of Paducah was secretary.
Sixteen local DeMolay youths depart Saturday for the Area Six Conclave in Wichita Falls. Attendees include Steve Howard Danny Havins Steve Tha ten John Icenhower Doyle Mooney Joe Crain Todd Nelson Alan Collins Jim Wakefield David Bradford Brett Parr Eddie Smith Wayne Compton and Mark Anderson. They are accompanied by D P Dodge Ted Shelton and Dewey Smith. Demonstrations on DeMolay degrees and ritual participation by Jim Wakefield are planned, along with athletic events such as swimming track tennis and basketball.
Chief of Police Alvis Maddox joined 37 law enforcement officers at the Texas and Oklahoma Peace Officers Investigation Association meeting in Vernon. Representing towns included Altus Lawton Duncan Vernon Wichita Falls Iowa Park and Electra with the next monthly gathering set for July 17 in Lawton.
