Cullman Alabama May 12 A warrant by United Strawberry Growers seeks a man calling himself W. E. Lang accused of paying 65 crates of strawberries with travelers checks drawn on a non existent New York bank. Checks 5 to 50 dollars. Described as about 30, medium height, 140 pounds, dark hair, brown to black eyes, unkempt, driving an old pick up truck. Louis J Vogel asks tips to locate him via wire.

Ralph C Conord of New York age 35, partner in A T Conord & Bros., died in Montclair New Jersey after a long illness. He served in World War I, later worked as a salesman in the family fruit and vegetable business, and spent time in Florida for health. Funeral held in Montclair. survived by wife, a son, a daughter, his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Prospects for a full sized peach and apple crop in Illinois are good though the Kieffer pear crop will be short. Freeze damage is light in most areas, apples bloomed well, and early apples look promising with movement starting late June. If a full crop is harvested, Illinois may ship around 3,500 cars, far above last year’s totals.
Fruit and vegetable dealers from Colorado Kansas Nebraska Oklahoma and Missouri met rail executives in Kansas City for an all day discussion on transportation problems affecting the industry. Attended as individuals not as a group, with E L Brown of Brown Fruit Company Grand Island Neb serving as chairman. Other attendees included William Garfitt secretary of the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association and Graham Cooksey among others.

Salinas California May 12 the Salinas-Watsonville lettuce market was mainly sluggish with slow demand as daily car shipments ran 230 to 270. Midweek steadied and inquiry improved with carloads quoted around 1 00 cash, sixes at 80 cents, occasional high quality cars at 1 20. Weather is growing warmer and yields rising, with forecasts of May acreage tightening shipments to about 260 cars daily later in the month.
Hagiehurst Mississippi May 12 Estimates late this week put remaining cabbage cars for shipment under Mississippi deal at less than 1,000. Through Tuesday 1,157 cars shipped. Monday 95. Minneapolis officials announce a new $300,000 produce terminal to be built by the Rock Island Lines on Fourth Street between Eighth and Tenth Avenues. Six firms have signed leases including Morris Fruit and Produce, Eng Olson, American Fruit and Produce, Harry Brooks & Co, and Stacy Distributing. Completion is planned by September 1 with rail trackage Refrigeration and modern stores to serve fruit and vegetable operators in a centralized market. The project follows decades of calls for updated facilities as old markets outgrew capacity. A city plan to merge wholesale and municipal markets faced opposition over rents and rail access.
Millard Vinson of Fort Valley ships the first Georgia peaches of the season a Mountain Rose crate to New York via express for Dingfelder & Co. The Exchange predicts 6,557 cars of fruit in sight this season and notes carrot shipments may begin by May 16. Estimated yields by variety list Mountain Rose 96, Aneedas 190, Early Rose 660, Hileya 2,680, Georgia Belles 206, Bilbertas 1,562, totaling a substantial crop for the year.
Tallahassee May 12 A bill to license dealers in Florida farm produce was introduced. It requires a $10 annual license and a bond of at least $1,000 to the State Commissioner of Agriculture. The bill covers individuals partnerships associations and corporations engaged in buying selling and handling farm produce.
The Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Fruit Jobbers Association will hold its annual meeting in Appleton on Saturday June 10 at the Conway hotel. Officers for the ensuing year will be elected and secretary Fred J. Leonard notes many reservations already received from distant points including St. Louis. An outstanding banquet speaker is planned.
Nampa Idaho May 12 The annual convention of the Growers and Shippers Association of Idaho will convene at Sun Valley on June 9 and 10. Earlier notice in The Packer stated June 8 and 9, but dates have been corrected to June 9 and 10.
Loxley Alabama May 12 Potatoes from Baldwin county move smoothly this week despite showers. Digging resumed Thursday to normal 200 250 cars daily with around 3000 cars expected by Saturday night. Peak shipments next week 200 260 cars daily mostly Bliss Triumphs and White Rose. Cucumber deals active with good growing conditions and quality. Green corn tassels and ears coming in fast with prospects for fine quality.
Washington May 12 selection of Dayton D as the second city to start the food order stamp plan for distributing surpluses through normal trade channels was announced by Secretary Wallace Daytons plan tests will involve about 14000 relief cases and 40000 people with two variations in Dayton One groups of 5000 general relief recipients will get blue surplus food stamps for extra purchases in lieu of orange stamps The second variation allows WPA workers and others to buy orange stamps with cash and receive blue stamps free Gy blue stamps are issued at about 60 cents per week per family member Actual operation in Dayton expected within a month and other cities to be announced after surveys are completed
Harlingen Texas May 12 reports the spring tomato movement from the lower Rio Grande valley is off to a slow start. Most operators expect real volume shipments the week of May 22 with peak about May 27. Dry weather and high winds in April reduced the first bloom and delayed shipments. Recent favorable weather raises expectations for high quality tomatoes and compliance with new bulk shipment and true markings laws improves confidence in Texas grade and pack.
