El Centro Calif May 19 Imperial Valley shipments of cantaloupes exceed 100 cars with early lots from broad acreage quality excellent and sizes ranging from standard to jumbo. Market demand remains strong with f.o.b values easing and forecasts of 75 to 100 cars daily by late May and a peak between June 6 and 10 under cooler to warming temperatures.
Warren G. Baker, head of the George A Hahn Company in Muscatine, died Friday evening after a brief illness of heart trouble. He was 48, Iowa State College graduate, married Marie Hahn in 1930, survived by two daughters Ruth Anne and Alice Marie, a sister Myrta, brother Roy N. Funeral services were held Monday at home and the Methodist church. The Hahn Company will be continued by Mrs. Baker.
Hazlehurst Mississippi May 19 1919 crops of Tender Green Black Valentine and wax beans are good and increasing. Acreage is normal and rains benefitted the crop. Cabbage shipments run to May 27 with 300 to 500 cars likely on trade orders after Saturday night. FSCC 300 car order to Mississippi may fill this week at 8 dollars per ton. Tomato acreage is slightly short but conditions are ideal. First carrot shipment expected by May 31.

International Apple Association publicizes its convention committees for the August 8 to 11 meeting in Cincinnati. W. Wert named General Chairman. J J Castellini honorary chairman. committee heads include Registration, Hotel Reservations, and Entertainment with multiple members from Cincinnati firms and food companies.
Washington May 19 The Interstate Commerce Commission suspended until December 15 proposed supplements on damage tolerances for watermelons and set a June 8 hearing. The rules would allow 4 percent tolerance on round watermelons and 2 percent on long types, provoking shipper protests nationwide. Watermelon distributors say most southeast shipments are round and railroads would benefit.
Samuel H. Simons of Glasgow Scotland, 60, director of Simons and Co Ltd, died last Sunday. He was a leading figure in the fruit import trade, with vast activity in citrus and deciduous fruits worldwide. Survivors include his widow and son Michael G. Simons. brother Ernest chairs the firm. The loss is mourned across Great Britain and European perishables trade.
May forecast for Georgia peaches fell short as a carload failed to move on May 16. Cold weather kept shipments from leaving, with 40s temperatures persisting. Weather bureau says warmer days are ahead and sunshine should arrive in coming weeks. Fort Valley sent the first Mayflower crate last week and Peach County may supply the first solid carrot shipment when ready. The Georgia Peach Growers Exchange predicts about 5,667 cars of various varieties for the season.

Denver May 19 At the Colorado Perishable Shippers Association annual meeting shippers demand action from rail carriers as 10 000 railroad cars were hauled by truck during the 1938 39 season A committee proposes a resolution noting strained relations and recalling earlier railroad support for perishable freight and published rates.
Washington May 19 The Department of Agriculture reports commercial early potatoes production in seven states surpassing last year and 1928 37 average. California leads with a 305 bushels per acre yield and a 10 370 000 bushel crop. others face frosts and wet planting conditions. overall acreage only slightly higher than last year.
Loxty Ala May 19 Through May 18 some 3500 cars of potatoes have moved from Baldwin county area centering here. Demand is very good with prices low to fair. Most stocks are Triumphs with a liberal supply of long White Rose. cucumber deal halfway complete. 35 cars moved daily this week. carrot shipments to start around May 26.
The Department of Agriculture estimates the Imperial Valley cantaloupe crop at 5,044,000 crates, below last year’s 6,162,000 and under the ten year average of 5,411,000. The estimate covers cantaloupes, honey balls, honey dews and miscellaneous melons.
May 19 report notes the season's first shipment of Mountain Rose Georgia peaches arriving in New York. Two-inch peaches sold in half baskets for 2.25 dollars, while one and three-fourths inch peaches brought 43 cents.
In Lakeland on May 19 Florida fruit men owning about 90 percent of the remaining Valencia crop agreed to voluntary movement limits. shipments capped at 1000 cars weekly for the current week. The move, effective Monday after a three day picking holiday, aims to raise prices and stimulate sluggish markets due to oversupply. John A. Snirley and J. M. Morrow led the meeting. A follow up session was set for later this week to set prorates.
The new truck terminal at C platform of the Pennsylvania Railroad, Delaware and Oregon avenues, opened at 1 15 am Monday. Operated by Philadelphia Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Terminals Inc, directors include J Earle Roberts and W J McCormick. The 500 by 108 feet facility is split into 42 units, each handling three carloads daily, with initial sales strong among out of town buyers.
Governor Loren D. Dickinson signs into law a Michigan Apple Advertising Bill creating a five member commission to administer a sales promo campaign funded by a per bushel tax. The first 300 bushels sold from each farm are tax exempt. collection handled by the commission with banks and businesses urged to cooperate.
Washington May 19 report shows May 1 storage totals of apples at 9 000 barrels 2 603 000 western boxes 2 071 000 bushels with baskets, down from last year's 32 000 barrels 2 318 000 boxes and 3 365 000 bushels. Packed Bartletts total 2 000 boxes with 59 000 boxes and 5 000 baskets of other varieties. Last year Bartletts were absent and other varieties totaled 67 000 boxes and 3 000 baskets.
The Agriculture Department estimates total watermelon acreage at 265,950 for the current year, up from 262,950 last year but below the ten year average of 248,840. Florida and Imperial Valley plantings total 27,000 acres, with Florida yields around 6.3 million melons and Imperial Valley about 3.57 million. Early states show a 2 percent planting rise overall, while late states plan a 3 percent increase. Weather has slowed vine growth in many areas and rainfall shortages hit south Texas. shipments begin with Newberry and Trenton areas soon increasing.
Chicago and Washington reports show united farm groups opposing House Bill H. R. 5435 by Mary Norton to curb exemptions from the Fair Labor Standards Act. Farm associations urged substitution with the Barden bill. protests blocked action under suspension of rules. Chairman Norton withheld the measure after strong opposition from agricultural interests.
Gibson Tenn May 19 The west Tennessee cabbage deal starts first cars Monday May 22 with general shipments around May 26. Last year rail movement about 600 cars and 150 200 more by truck. this year total shipments may reach 800 to 1000 cars. Growth peaks about May 29. Growers pack in Los Angeles crates ponies sacks and bulk.
