Spacetel links BC remote sites to world network
British Columbia tests a satellite voice and data link, Spacetel, by AEL Microtel and Microtel Pacific Research, connecting remote mining, logging, and oil sites to Vancouver and beyond. Trials included Quintette Coal, Sparwood, Northern Vancouver Island, and Queen Charlotte areas with clients like B C Hydro and Canadian Forest Products. Commercial service targeted for Q4, with plans for up to 120 locations and 12 channels per unit. The system uses a portable dish and compact RF gear, enabling Vancouver numbers and services from remote camps. BC Day holiday closes post offices August 1 with normal service August 2.

Phillips unveils Act to repeal BC Harbours Board
Industry minister Don Phillips tables the British Columbia Harbours Board Repeal Act to shrink Crown agency scope. The 1967 board promoted harbour development and Roberts Bank work, with planned Ridley Island projects, Campbell River studies, and rail and lands management shifted to BC Railway and BC Development Corporation as Ottawa decentralizes the National Harbours Board. The government argues the move secures leaner governance and enhanced Pacific Rim port access at Vancouver and Prince Rupert.
