Acquittal in Latimer County Sheriff Murder Trial

The Latimer County jury acquitted Sheriff Martin on the first indictment after he led a posse that fired on strikers, killing and wounding several. Witnesses testified the strikers formed an unlawful, terrorizing mob, and the sheriff acted to disperse them at all hazards. About thirty-five indictments remain.

Judge rules 1897 mortgage relief act unconstitutional

In Lewis County a Superior Court decision holds that the March 16 1897 act granting debtors in mortgage foreclosures a 12 month redemption possession was unconstitutional as applied to mortgages executed before the law took effect. Francis Willard Memorial Service Held at Pe Ell Church

Sunday night the W C T U held a Francis Willard memorial service at the Methodist church in Pe Ell. W A Reynolds spoke on Neal Dow, Rev Elliot spoke on Willard as a Christian worker, and Mrs Mattie Graves of Centralia gave an address. Other speakers included Mrs J N Crow, Mrs Ducket, Miss May Reynolds, and Rev G J Taylor.

Populist Love Feast Draws Small Crowd

About 40 populists attended a Saturday gathering with nearby precincts represented while distant areas were less so. Resolutions condemned the supreme court and urged Governor Rogers to call an extra legislative session to submit constitutional amendments on tax exemptions and the initiative and referendum. Speaker Cline urged members to avoid losing the legislature this fall.

City Marshal Charles Michaelis informs residents of Chehalis about a curfew law. Children under fifteen must not be on public streets after nine o clock without a parent. Police may arrest violators to keep four children off the streets at night.

Vitrified Brick Paving and Drainage Resolutions Passed

City council on Monday night declared its intention to pave Chehalis avenue block from Walters corner to Boistfort street and Boistfort street between First National bank and Maynard Everett Co. and Commercial State Bank with vitrified brick. It also approved a 5 inch tile drainage system from Berry's corner to Park street and Pacific avenue with connected drains, with a 4 inch tile drain beside T C Rush's Paragon. Costs to be charged to abutting properties. A sewer petition for Buist Fort street and hillside district was presented. Rush renewal of saloon license granted. A petition to vacate streets and alleys in City Garden addition was presented.

Burnett Brothers to Open Jewelry Store in Local Bank Building

Louis H. Burnett and Morris Burnett have leased half a room in the Commercial State Bank building from Huber the tailor and will open a jewelry shop. Their stock arrives soon and the room will be neatly fitted as a pretty store. Louis will specialize in optical work after graduating from Chicago Ophthalmic College in 1893.
