Ordinance For 5 Men On RR Crew In St Joseph Missouri
St Joseph city council approved by 5 to 4 vote an ordinance requiring that every train moving through the city carry at least five crewmen. About 130 railroad workers in six railroads are affected. The measure, the first of its kind in the state, drew two hours of debate. He warned that rising demand and falling unemployment tempt both managers and unions to push prices and wages, risking a wage-price spiral and weaker real wages. AFL-CIO head Meany and UAW president Reuther signaled they would not be bound by the guidelines.
