The state highway commission plans a two week origin destination survey around Chanute. Interview sites include US 169 near town and eight locations on state highways and county roads with 16 hour stations. Data will aid the phase 2 701 planning study by Burgwin and Martin at no city cost.
New York AP reports a nude teenage telephonist was attacked in a Bronx office building. About 40 bystanders allegedly watched without helping as the assailant tore off her clothes before two patrolmen intervened and arrested 26 year old George Coughlin on morals rape felonious assault and weapons charges.
National Guard unit Company A of the 174th Quartermaster Battalion staged a practice alert testing unit communications. The alert used radio, TV and phone calls, began at 6:20 p.m., with 30 men present in 30 minutes and 61 by 45 minutes, four officers and 87 enlisted within an hour. The drill, held without notice, checks mobilization communications for emergency duty.
An intercepted letter chides the legislature and governor over the site selection and funding for a minimum security prison. The writer likens concerns to those voiced by Mr Kaiser, noting frustration with absence of a suitable site and adequate funds.
Fire Chief C W Brennan reported Chanute fire losses for April at about 200 dollars. Through May 1 the four month total is about 1 835 dollars, well below April 1963 and the 1964 first quarter. Fifteen runs occurred in April including grass, car, and residential alarms, plus a Tioga township visit and a hotel upholstery fire.
George W. Donaldson of Cha nute announced today his candidacy on the Republican ticket for a second term as judge of the 7th judicial district. The district includes Neosho and Wilson counties.
Area forecast calls for Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with little temperature change through Wednesday. Highs in the 80s, reaching 85 to 90 Wednesday. Tonight lows 65 to 70, and 40s in the far northwest. Winds gusting around 50 mph from a new Rocky Mountain low front. Topeka area expects warm, windy conditions.
A two year deal between Amalgamated Meatcutters and Butchers Workmen and the Topeka Grocers' Assn ends a three month strike. About 100 union employees are involved. Terms not announced. Stores include Sutton Food Stores Butner's IGA Bibble's IGA Faller's Markets Harry's IGA and Russ' Farm Market.
Chanute board of education authorizes preliminary planning for a possible new junior college and gymnasium within two years. A year-long study aims to finish by May 1965, with a moratorium on bond elections until then and a potential bond vote by July 1965 for a separate 50 acre site in the southwest part of the city.
Police held three youths Walter Lee Akridge Bobby L. Gumm and Freddie Gurwell on theft and property damage charges. A 15 year old and a fourth juvenile not in custody were connected, with a fifth, Tommy Graham 18, scheduled for court. Details describe beer theft from a truck and lawnmower theft and later damage to a tractor and storage tank.
AP reports Robert J. Kaiser resigned as Kansas director of penal institutions citing legislature size and funding as key issues. Gov. Anderson will appoint a successor, Norva Stucker to run the department in interim. Kaiser, former Leavenworth deputy warden, left after about two years amid pension and site objections.
A state and county suit filed in district court names Norman Anderson of El Paso Texas and 21 Kansas cemetery firms including Greenlawn Memorial Park in Chanute. Plaintiffs Attorney General William Ferguson Neosho County Attorney Robert Pennington and Insurance Commissioner Frank L Sullivan seek to convert firms not for profit to for profit, require annual reports endowment end perpetual care funds and irrevocable trust funds from interment space sales, and prohibit vault sales or life-insurance contracts until funds are properly placed. Hearing set for May 28 before Dist. Judge George Donaldson.
A break in at the South Mound elevator was reported to the sheriff's office last night. Under sheriff Don Harding was leading the investigation this morning.
April bonds and fines totaled 387, down from March 536, with a quarterly total of 2144 from January to May. Parking penalties reached 228. 990 parking tickets were issued. Calls for service rose by 19 to 310. 57 misdemeanor and no felonies were recorded. Intoxication arrests fell to two. one driving while intoxicated arrest per month. Traffic summonses numbered 33 with eight legal parking, seven running stops, five speeding, two lights, one each for no driver’s license and failing to yield. One radar speeding ticket issued. 20 traffic accidents investigated, 15 in daylight, 1 injury. Animal control picked up 52 dogs. 5 reclaimed, 9 placed, 37 euthanized. Police cars logged 7059 miles and used 796 gallons of gas. Fourteen prisoner meals were served, down 17 from March.
AP report from Topeka notes a 24 hour death toll in Kansas up to 9 am today. The May figures show 8 fatalities for May 1964 compared with 149 in the comparable 1963 period.
The Air Force attributed a recent string of flying saucer reports to a hoax by children hoping to trick a younger sister. Investigators ruled out the Helena Montana skid marks as a prank, while Socorro New Mexico reports are being reviewed by J Allen Hynek.
