Harker Mansion First Brick in Storm Lake

In 1874 Storm Lake’s oldest mansion, the Harker home, was built for banker James Harker and his wife Mary. The house, with its French style and first-burnt local brick, hosts eleven children in its history, an England-born lineage, and memories of civil war hardships, while widow Mary Allison Harker, 83, preserves its heritage and notes her vote for women’s rights.

Last of the early landmarks a romantic reminder of heritage

Gordon Linge recounts the 1875 Harker House at West Third and Lake Avenue in Storm Lake, the first brick residence in Buena Vista County. Once home to James Harker’s descendants, it hosted social events for decades, with a band in the living room bay window and the county’s first furnace installed in 1877.
