Bert Lewis bought the first automobile in Buena Vista County, a single seated Oldsmobile capable of about 20 miles per hour. He drove it from Sioux City to Storm Lake, sparking excitement and many early mishaps with horses and drivers. By 1904 Storm Lake and the county were overrun with gas buggies.
In 1935 a fugitive gun slayer Donald Lammey was described as a visitor to Storm Lake while on the run. Phil Brown recalls hosting Lammey at dinner in Storm Lake’s north jungle where hobos camped along the railroad tracks during tough years.
