Monticello Youth Becomes Chief Of Announcers at CBS

George Guyan, a Monticello, Iowa native and former Stephens college ideal faculty family member, rises to supervisor of 22 CBS Chicago radio announcers at WBBM CBS. His climb from Monticello to Grinnell to the University of Iowa included drama, rapid-fire stage work, and early announcer stints in East St. Louis and Columbia Missouri before joining CBS Chicago.

Local Governments Spend Heavily Too Budget Boss Asserts

CHICAGO UP Harold D Smith director of the budget told the American Municipal association that local costs of government in 1938 reached 7 1 000 000 000 while federal costs were 6 800 000 000. He noted defense spending raised the federal share but local budgets still exceeded federal output before the defense rise. He urged municipalities to avoid debt build up and to preserve cash and credit for post defense burdens. He urged freezing surplus revenues in dormant bank deposits or federal bonds.
