In Clanton Alabama a Sunday night bus crash near the city killed 15 people and left seven injured. Driver W P Alton died from burns after valiantly rescuing passengers, including two men who escaped through a back door. Passenger Mary Eleanor Finney identified as among the dead, while 13 other victims remained unidentifiable.
In Wheaton Illinois a Blue Bird Lines passenger bus collided with an automobile near Westmont. The car’s gasoline tank exploded causing a blaze that engulfed both vehicles. The two occupants of the automobile were burned beyond recognition and died. Fifteen people sustained minor injuries.
A Sunday crash of a Crown Coach bus north of Neosho Missouri injured 26 people. Among the injured were four Iowans: Jacqueline Garrett four of Council Bluffs. J W Garrett seventy four and his wife seventy five, both of Council Bluffs, grandparents of Jacqueline. and Alfred F Heitman twenty three of Sioux City.
London dispatch says infantile paralysis and spotted typhus fever are sweeping unoccupied areas of France. Letters from Switzerland quoted in the Daily Express claim up to half of cases die in some districts and hundreds of new cases are reported daily.
Russia reported a small Japanese patrol attacked a frontier guard post on the Far East border. Tass said 20 Japanese soldiers struck near Ras kin o, with some wounded on both sides and arms abandoned on Soviet soil. Analysts warned of wider implications amid Japan's Manchukuo buildup and signals of possible moves toward Burma road and Indo China.
Tornadoes struck two rural Arkansas areas killing 12 in Hamburg and five in Dardanelle, with scores injured and many homeless. Names of the dead include residents of Hamburg and Dardanelle. Emergency beds opened, communications down, and medical units deployed to treat victims.
President Roosevelt asked Monday for draft plans to consolidate the civilian conservation corps with the national youth administration and to move CCC administration from the war department to the federal security agency led by Paul V. McNutt. The move aims to free the War Department to focus on defense.
In Madisonville Kentucky sixteen miners were rescued and 29 more were reported safe after a Sterling Coal mine explosion at Daniel Boone. Fifteen men remained missing as officials investigated the cause. Rescued workers were brought to the surface in ropes attached to barrels. the mine cage was disabled by the blast. The 15 missing men were located 2800 feet back from the main shaft, cut off from that entrance. A rescued miner described the blast as terrific, knocking out group members, destroying mine car trackage and wiring.
In Vichy France the German authorities granted a second reprieve saving 50 hostages from execution at midnight in Nantes for the assassination of a German officer. The measure also delayed the firing squad for 50 more hostages at Bordeaux scheduled for midnight Wednesday.
The report says allied forces around Moscow held, while a German drive nears Rostov and Donets basin. Talks between British and Russian leaders at Tiflis consider joint defense of Trans Caucasus oil regions. Wavell may be in conference with Timoshenko. 1,000,000 troops available for Russian support.
Washington AP The United Mine Workers said about 95 percent of the 53 000 miners in captive mines were idle in response to a strike order from John L Lewis despite a new appeal from President Roosevelt for workers to stay at their jobs. Roosevelt urged an end to the stoppage to keep coal flowing for steel and national defense as Taylor agreed to meet Lewis Wednesday to seek a settlement.

Berlin reports German dive bombers damaged and sank a major British warship off the North African coast by direct bomb hits. The high command said the attack occurred Saturday night and was confirmed Monday.
Three separate accidents Sunday left one person injured and resulted in six charges. Mrs. Robert M. Menary, 57, sustained a head bump and bruises when her car collided with a vehicle driven by Paul Paterson Jr., 16. Menary faced a $2 fine for failure to yield the right of way, suspended on costs. Dick Madison, 22, of 1327 K Avenue NE, faces three charges after the car he drove was involved in another crash.
Linn County Safety Week organizers aim to set up a free car testing lane in the police garage for five days starting November 2. The plan seeks 24 hour no-accident White Friday on November 7 with wind shield OK stickers for cars passing inspection. Captain Gordon Hughes says machinery is promised to run about 300 cars daily and authorized stations will issue official stickers after inspection.
Secretary Hull told the Senate foreign relations committee that the United States would avoid war unless forced by Hitler while pursuing a policy of self defense. He argued for repealing neutrality act bans on arming merchantmen and on ships entering belligerent ports, asserting a strong stance at sea to defend rights and aid Britain. Admiral Stark supported expanding protections for merchant vessels amid reports of increased attacks on unarmed ships.
Ethel Johnson, 33, of 613 Seventh Avenue SE, was jailed on a drunk driving charge after deputies Harlan Snyder and Pete Whittemore stopped her on Highway 149 near the city limits. Her car allegedly forced them off the road and ran a stop sign at Highway 30. Two other passengers, Leo Johnson of 426 Seventh Avenue SE and Lester Fielder, 19, YMCA, faced intoxication charges and were fined 25 plus costs by Justice H. R. Churchill.
