Lawyer duel over right to work fuels 15th District race
Democratic incumbent Bob Rush and challenger Lloyd Humphreys spar over labor and right to work in a tight Cedar Rapids district race. They clash on agency shop, open meetings, sunset laws, tax reform, and state budgeting while outlining differing views on abortion funding, education, and state oversight. Pro-Life Action Council withholds endorsement in Iowa race
Des Moines reports that Pro-Life Action Council did not endorse Governor candidate Jerry Fitzgerald for failing to back the proposed life amendment to ban most abortions. Council leader Carolyn Thompson cited the non federal candidate's stance on ratification, while noting Fitzgerald supported efforts to limit public abortion funding. Thompson personally hopes Fitzgerald wins and aims for a turnout similar to the June primary as leaflets featuring a fetal image are prepared.

Steiger backs Tauke while attacking tax cut plan
Wisconsin congressman William Steiger praised parts of the $18.7 billion tax cut bill but called it not perfect and criticized Senator Kennedy. He campaigned in Iowa for Tom Tauke and warned that most Americans may pay more in taxes next year due to Social Security and inflation. Tauke labeled the plan a sham and blasted incumbent Mike Blouin for opposing real cuts. Both favored the Nunn Amendment to cut taxes 25 percent over five years with inflation-based spending limits and a 1982 balanced budget.
