Welding Sparks Start Fire Above Transportation Center
A welding torch sparked a blaze Tuesday at the Ground Transportation Center area damaging the first floor of an office tower under construction. The fire started around 10 30 a m when a spark ignited a foam filled vasal used as a temporary wall around the elevator. Smoke spread as wind fed the flames, but damage remained mostly to canvas and the metal deck. Wayne Engle is the private developer of the 13 story tower above the center. In 1626 Peter Minuit landed on Manhattan Island and later bought it from the Indians for 24 worth of trinkets.
