Earthquake rocks Coalinga California injuring dozens

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Coalinga in the San Joaquin Valley causing collapsed buildings, multiple fires, and dozens of injuries. The disaster, felt across California from Sacramento to Santa Barbara and to Reno, prompted emergency crews to treat up to 50 injured as aftershocks continued.

Factory orders jump to highest since 1981

U S factory orders rose 3.2 percent in March to 161.8 billion dollars, the highest since September 1981, with shipments up 2.4 percent to 160.2 billion. Inventories fell 1.5 percent for the 13th straight month, while unemployment held at 10.3 percent.

Amana to Recall 60 Workers This Month

Amana Refrigeration Inc plans to recall 60 manufacturing employees at its Iowa plant this month. Forty return Monday. the remaining 20 expected by month’s end with no fixed timetable. The move leaves 100 workers with recall rights under the union contract as Amana cites improving sales across wholesale, distributor, and retail levels. The Iowa plant previously employed 2,000, down from a 1981 spring peak of about 3,000. Amana is a Raytheon subsidiary manufacturing microwave ovens, refrigerators, and freezers.
