Tony Roche, age 43, rallies to defeat Pancho Gonzalez 10 8 in the opening set then sweeps 6 2 15 4 to reach the semifinals of the 25 000 MSG Open. Andre Gimeno and Arthur Ashe advance. Emerson beats Santana as Haas and others progress.
Bill Allen of Fresno California extended his lead to 119 pins after 12 games with a 1235 in six Friday qualifiers bringing his 48 game total to 3911 in the $45000 New Orleans Open. Paul Zergelis Hopewell Virginia was second with 3793 and Jim Stefanich Joliet Illinois was third at 3767. The 136 man field was cut to 86 for the final six qualifiers. Top 16 advance to Friday's semifinal with the leading five moving to Saturday's telecast finals.
In Kansas City the 42nd National Golden Gloves crowned team champion as Kansas City took the title with 19 points, edging Cowaland Lac é 1. Individual finals saw heavy favorites fall with Lorenzo Trujillo of Grand Rapids losing to James Busceme, Mike Quarry ousted after a controversial crowd reaction, and John Brown knocked out by Morris Jordan. Walter E. Moore Jr. claimed heavyweight title, echoing his father’s victory in 1943. Other winners included Tony Moreno, Oliver James, Eddie Murray, Eddie Seanford, David Oropeza, and Roosevelt Malden in respective weights.
Holstrom takes an ABC Century Award after posting a 269 game and 665 series in the Collins Industrial Nite Owl league. Dee Clapton leads the Women’s City Major with a 253 game while Judy Tudor and Helen Netzger post strong series in May City leagues. Other top scores include Dean Winterowd 247 631 and Kay McGuire 587 in Welcome Wagon.
