House plan would boost Iowa road funds to over 100 million

Iowa may gain 25 percent more federal road money under the House plan than the Senate. Chet Sloan of the Iowa Good Roads Association cites higher annual funding, bridge needs, and a growing highway trust balance as reasons to support the House bill which is headed for a conference committee.

House and Senate split on highway funding extensions

Sloan explains the House plan would start reducing the $11 billion balance, extending the trust fund four years and authorization six years, ending near $4 billion and avoiding fuel tax increases. The Senate keeps $7.5 billion annually for two years, with a shorter extension. A conference committee may seek a four year extension and six year authorization, warning of possible funding declines toward $9 or $10 billion. Iowa, though 23rd in area, ranks 9th in road mileage and needs over $1 billion annually to improve all roads, with current resources about $450 million and a proposed tax hike adding roughly $50 million more to reach about $500 million, still short of needs.
