The Supreme Court unanimously held the Treasury need not impose countervailing duties on imports from Japan, including television sets, rejecting Zenith Radio Corp. claims of export subsidies. Justice Marshall said Japan's tax rebates do not meet the law's bounty standard, avoiding U.S. price increases and potential trade tension. The decision upholds Treasury practice since 1897 and curbs calls to counteract indirect subsidies.
The Iowa Department of Substance Abuse reports Cedar Rapids has the highest heroin use rate among seven Iowa cities based on interviews with 40 drug users. Des Moines shows 7 percent, with other cities like Quad Cities cited for minimal heroin use. Marijuana remains the top drug overall.
About 70 residents met at Jane Boyd Community House to discuss alleged police provoked violence. Calls to dismiss three officers emerged but no formal action was taken. In Cedar Rapids two youths, Keith Maide and Isaac Pledge, aged 16 and 15, face juvenile petitions charging delinquency by reason of forcible felony robbery that caused the death of 76 year old Jessie De La Mater during a purse snatching at McKinley Junior High. The county attorney seeks transfer to adult court for possible grand jury indictments for murder in the first degree or theft involuntary manslaughter.
A nude passenger in her mid twenties ran from first class into the No Frills section of a National Airlines DC-10 between Miami and Los Angeles. She brandished a champagne bottle, climbed over six seats, claimed she had inherited $5 million, and was subdued by crew and wrapped in a blanket. Passengers reacted with laughter and astonishment as the incident ended before landing in Los Angeles.
