Dramatic Drop in Soybeans This Week

Soybean prices slid 55 cents from a recent peak after an $2 rise since April. Willy Hansen of Vinton cites unusual trading on the Chicago Board of Trade, while ISU economist Bob Wisner links the drop to profit taking and weather relief. Traders seek to lock in next year’s supplies as forecasts point to a weather market through August. Minnesota’s drought impact and corn market adjustments also factor into the broader grain picture.

Smith backs revising farm census process in Congress

Rep. Neal Smith proposes moving the agricultural census from the census bureau to the Agriculture Department and using the Statistical Reporting Service with sampling methods. He cites mass mailing as ineffective for the 1969 census, noting misses in cattle counts and late, obsolete data. The measure aims to reduce costs and avoid jail penalties for nonresponse, while the census bureau opposes the change.
