Three American diplomats were murdered in Beirut after a kidnapping. Witnesses described bodies found on a beach near the embassy area, each shot multiple times. The incident sparked a two hour artillery duel between Syrian and Palestinian forces, with casualties reported on both sides and at least 43 killed overall.
Testimony describes fatal wound to agent from a close contact shot and a hand injury prior to the fatal blow. An FBI expert notes numerous bullet holes in cars. defense seeks to keep two government witnesses available. Prosecution witnesses place Williams near the raid and connect Butler to the area. Additional defense motions allege government misconduct and missing documents.

Services Saturday 10 a m at St Matthew’s Catholic Church. Wake Friday 7 p m at Turner chapel east. Cremation at Turner crematory. Memorials suggested to Kennedy High School vocal music.
Linn County Democrats will hold a Friday convention at the Knights of Columbus hall with the same delegates as March 6. Alternate seating rules mirror the original plan, replacing absent delegates with alternates from the same presidential preference group. Chair Rita Huber calls the rule asinine and plans an amendment for two years hence. Nominations occur on the floor with one-minute speeches, ballots reducing to two candidates, and winner requires 50 percent plus one. The event involves 415 delegates, though attendance may be low.
Charles Trussell, 60, of 1200 Cheyenne Rd NW, named Republican candidate for state representative in the 28th district. Uncontested nomination by district GOP leaders fills vacancy after no primary candidates, with Rep. Wally Horn the Democratic incumbent seeking another term.
Cynthia J. Pettit, 35, in fair condition at St. Luke's with abdominal injuries after losing control on her property. Dennis J. Barton, 23, and passenger John J. Roberts, 30, were treated and released from Mercy hospital after Barton's motorcycle spilled in his driveway.
