Pest Scout Program Aims to Cut Pesticide Use
Government scientists seek 1.85 million dollars to expand pest scout trials across cotton and other crops. The program trains scouts to gauge insect populations and advise farmers when spraying is necessary, reducing costs and protecting honeybees. Early Arizona results show lower chemical use with equal or better yields, and bee health improving.

Meat Type Hogs Face Higher Stress and Death Risk
An Iowa State animal scientist warned at the 24th annual Reciprocal Meat conference that selecting for very muscular meat type pigs increases death losses and quality problems. Muscular hogs show lighter muscle, drier cooked meat, and higher shrinkage, linked to stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine. Industry must balance meat type breeding with stress adaptation to avoid financial losses.
