Bruce Suthers, longtime Cedar Rapids resident and former Linn County juvenile probation officer, died Saturday in Heber Springs Arkansas. Surviving are his son Duncan Suthers of Cedar Rapids and his sister Mrs Dean Curtis of Van Horne.

Washington AP reports the bill to extend the draft for two years to June 30, 1973 survived a challenge. The Senate rejected Sen. James Buckley’s 20 month limit amendment 48 to 35, which would have set March 1, 1973 as the end date and pushed a faster shift to an all volunteer force in mid 1973.
Vice president Agnew received a white golf bag marked with a red cross from the Los Angeles county board of supervisors. The bag honors his errant shots at the Bob Hope Desert Golf Classic in Palm Springs last February.
Linn County Sheriff Walter Grant said an attorney for Joseph Abodeely reported the Cedar Rapids man wants to surrender to authorities without news coverage. Grant rejected any such arrangement, noting Abodeely remains at large as officials pursue him after a June 9 order to begin a five year term for a 1969 abortion aid conviction. The case moved through appeals in St Louis, where state imprisonment blocks were denied. Abodeely sought to bar state imprisonment, but both state and federal courts denied the requests.
Jeffrey Wallace age 19 of 1 Ridgeway Drive SE had a reckless driving charge dismissed Wednesday in municipal court. The city was not prepared for trial and the defense sought dismissal for lack of prosecution. The alleged incident involved attempting to run a school bus off Franklin Avenue and 20th Street NE on March 2.
Three men appeared in municipal court Thursday and pled innocent to assault and battery charges. Ricky Liggett, 18, of 511 Eighteenth street SE, faces an assault on Donald Farley dated June 10 with a July 27 trial. Robert Cerney, 865 Valley View drive, Marion, charged with assaulting Ruth Papke on May 18, has a June 29 trial. Robert Evans, 18, of 1361 Hillside drive NW, charged with an assault, has a July 23 trial. The information was signed by Odessa Davis for her daughter Doreen Davis.
Three men faced municipal court on charges of rape. Gene R. Clark, 20, and Allen L. Clark, 19, both of 3706 F avenue NE, await preliminary hearings with Gene set for July 21 and Allen for June 30. Leland Wood, 28, of 826 A avenue NE, has a hearing scheduled for Aug. 6.
William A. Moon, 21, of 847 Twelfth Street NE, appeared in municipal court Thursday to answer two burglary charges. He requested preliminary hearings, set for June 24, for a break-in at Steven Viers residence, 1006 Twelfth Street NE, and another at 1411 Oakland Road NE earlier Sunday.
Carl Steiner aged 28 from route two Marion appeared in municipal court and requested a preliminary hearing on a breaking and entering charge. The hearing is scheduled for July 27. He is accused of breaking into a Marion landfill shed and stealing 85 pop bottles a 12 volt battery a portable sewing machine and a portable tape player.
Jane A. Hirsch of Evansdale bound over to the grand jury after a Wednesday preliminary hearing in municipal court. She faces an assault with intent to inflict great bodily injury charge. The information was signed by Donna Burnell, who says she received facial cuts from a broken beer bottle on February 13.
Linn deputy sheriff reports a burglary at the Whittier store discovered about 5 a.m. Thursday. About $80 worth of groceries were stolen.
The Iowa Supreme Court censured Cedar Rapids municipal court judges Hullinger Reilly and Hansell and ordered tighter record keeping. The order requires initials and dates on every case file, brief notations of judicial actions, quarterly reports detailing case dispositions, and specific tracking of pending cases including names and filing dates. It also mandates cooperation among judges and development of administrative procedures with the clerk and staff.
The Cedar Rapids Community School District should seek a state study on racial imbalance from the Department of Urban Education. Neal Duff notes six all white schools and a potentially nearly all black school if action is delayed, stressing contact among diverse students to build understanding. Duff says the district must act now to avoid court intervention and welcome study findings.

Municipal Judge Loren Hullinger Jr denied that the State Justice Department statistician’s findings are true. He said he never faced accusers and would have faced a public hearing in Des Moines but accepted the court’s findings to avoid delay. He disputes a 24-hour week claim and argues for an additional municipal judge based on population.
Alice Avis, 18, appeared in municipal court and demanded a preliminary hearing on a charge of malicious injury to a building. Her hearing is scheduled for July 12. She allegedly broke china, poured a mixed drink on the floor, and attempted to strike Richard Havens with a telephone.
