Payday loan limits proposed by CFPB spark broad debate
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau unveiled a plan to curb payday lending with a full payment test for loans up to 500 dollars, restrict rollovers, bar auto-title collateral, and cap quick-debit attempts. It proposes two long term options: a 28 percent rate with a 20 dollar fee or a 36 percent total cost installment loan. The proposal aims to reduce debt traps while lenders argue they serve low income borrowers. Public comments are due by September 14 as the agency reviews other high risk products.
