Outside the Kalona Bakery the night air holds a rim of baked goods and a cloud like scent drifts from the street. Inside the aroma grows stronger as classic rock plays and pans clatter in the dishwasher. Starting at 10 p.m. overnight staff rush to work, flour dusting their clothes.
Online bakery staff pack more than 200 doughnuts along with dozens of cinnamon rolls and pastries. Night baker Melissa Vandenburg rolls dough while a 7 foot stack of baking sheets sits nearby. Icing coats doughnuts cooling on racks as hundreds are prepared for Fareway stores in Iowa City and special orders. At 3am owner Jon Troyer oversees final packaging before morning sales.
Authorities link a Thursday drive-by shooting in Cedar Rapids to broader rival gang activity. A 32 year old woman suffered a non life threatening lower body wound after shots in the 300 block of 17th Street SE. A 16 year old later arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound as police assess whether the cases are connected. Public safety officials named four local gangs and noted the suspects are youths aged 12 to early 20s. They said they know the members and where they live but not what sparked the deadly confrontations.
Five days before Mary Andringa said she would quit the Iowa Board of Regents Gov. Terry Branstad had arranged an interview with a longtime political ally about a potential appointment. Mike Richards later applied for the vacancy and was announced as Andringa’s replacement amid questions of inside deal.
