Oldest known black hole found near the universe’s dawn
Eduardo Banados and colleagues report ULAS J1342 0928 as the oldest and most distant black hole, 800 million solar masses, seen 690 million years after the Big Bang. The quasar in the galaxy shows rapid star formation and hints at early universe reionization during the Dark Ages.

Peshtigo Fire Remembered as Nation’s Overlooked Tragedy
The 1871 Peshtigo fire in Wisconsin killed up to 1,000 residents, scorched 1.5 million acres, and left survivors to wander ash filled streets. The disaster occurred alongside Chicago’s blaze and drew scant nationwide attention due to a lost telegraph line.
