In the Cedar Rapids mayoral runoff Brad Hart converted 28 precincts from opponents since the November election. He won 33 of 41 precincts and tied once with Monica Vernon, while Vernon carried seven precincts.
In Cedar Rapids the runoff elects Brad Hart, 61, over Monica Vernon, 60, amid turnout surge and a message favoring fresh leadership. Voters cite desire for new ideas as Hart edges ahead by about eight points despite Vernon’s earlier lead in the regular election. Senate Majority Leader Bill Dix told the Iowa Chamber Alliance that the next session will push "chapter 2" of Republican priorities with real tax relief. He said reforms should reduce income tax reliance to grow the economy and expand the tax base, while boosting workforce skills programs.
Muscatine couple Dick and Mary Jo Stanley donate ten million dollars to UI to fund a new home for the university’s nearly 50 year old art museum. The gift is described as transformational and supports replacing the current facilities with a modern space.
The Regents authorize spending 2.4 million to acquire a downtown bookstore while planning a 50 million 63 000 square foot visual arts museum above a flood plain near the Main Library. It will house offices classrooms and parking and allow the Jackson Pollock Mural to return home. The project will be funded by bonds and gifts and may be named after Dick and Mary Jo Stanley.
