Timeline shows Cora Okowski vanished in Tama in 2000. Her fiancé Tait Park faced multiple rulings from 2015 to 2016 culminating in a second trial and a 2016 verdict of second degree murder by Judge Thornhill, amid appeals and recusal issues.
Tait Park, 51, found guilty of second degree murder in the 2000 death of fiancee Cora Okowski in Tama County. Judge Tan Thornhill ruled evidence did not prove willful premeditation for first degree, but did establish malice aforethought for the lesser charge. Park faces 50 years in prison with a 35 year mandatory term.
A Cedar Rapids school facilities committee spent over a year drafting a district wide plan to close eight elementary schools tear down ten and build larger replacements. The plan will be presented to the school board Monday. Superintendent Brad Buck said the group aimed to include both district employees and community members though staff members filled about a quarter of the 25 guaranteed slots. Attendance showed 25 staff attendees at the first meeting and 34 non staff participants.
The Cedar Rapids school board will hear a facilities proposal affecting all 24 elementary schools. A vote could occur as early as January 22. The meeting starts at 5 30 p m and will be at the Educational Leadership and Support Center 2500 Edgewood Rd NW Cedar Rapids.
MedPharm Iowa, the first licensed medical cannabis manufacturer, expects 6,381 Iowans to register to buy products in 2019 with growth to 9,705 by 2021. About 200 have applied so far. The Des Moines facility will grow 96 plants on 400 square feet licensed from Kemin Industries. The expanded law covers cancer, Parkinsons, MS, seizures, Crohn's disease, ALS, AIDS, HIV and other terminal illnesses.
