Cedar Rapids Gazette (Newspaper) - December 1, 1974, Cedar Rapids, Iowa Its the Humane Thing To Do By Susan Welsh Humane Society Auxii'o^v When Christmas shopping for an animal lover or pet owner, don’t overlook hooks. And. if you fall in either of these catagories, you will undoubtedly find at least one book for yourself, as there are many to choose from. One of the most enjoyable animal books, complete with terrific photographs, is “The Silent Miaow" by Paul Galileo with photos by Susanne Szasz (Crown Publishers). Any feline fancier will immediately ‘ recognize the book from the title alone, as being one about cats, as cats very often do practice this type of beguiling behavior upon their humans. However, this book is unusual in that it was apparently written by a feline house pet and merely translated by Mr Galileo. It is written in first , person by the feline author as j a textbook and educational ' guide for cats and kittens who ! are searching for a home with j people and how to conquer i such a home and its human occupants. She very diligently and I technically covers all subjects i any cat would need to know in , order to successfully "take over" such a household. She J includes instructions on how I to get oneself into the house in j the first place, then how to I manage men, women and children, and on to how to es- | tablish personal territory such j as chairs and beds. She offers : information on more serious | subjects such as veterinarians, raising a family, feeding ; and manners This cat’s explanation of, and thoughts on, love for humans and their love for her is j one of the best I have ever heard or read and one that pet owners will readily relate to A lot can be said for this particular chapter on the subject | of love It can be applied in many ways — and only a J creature as intelligent as a I cat. (or a person who truly , understands and appreciates them, like Mr Galileo) could ever put into writing. The action photos on every page, complete with captions. , depict the expressions, antics, and attitudes that all pet j owners have experienced, but have never been able to catch for lack of a camera Every cat owner (oops, cat- j owned-person) will identify himself many times over in I his behavior toward his feline friend as described by this j highly intelligent pet, It is I also fascinating to compare this "author" to your own feline and to realize just how I much alike all cats seem to be — or at least lead you to believe they are Everyone should read "All | Creatures Great And Small" by James Herriot, veterinary surgeon (St Martin's Press). This book deals with people and animals and of course there is no better combination for story telling. Dr Herriot shows a great deal of insight into people, as to how they differ because' of background, locale or occupation. You get the feeling that he likes people as much as he does the animals he is treating Each chapter tells a separate story cf the people and the animals involved in the experiences of Dr Herriot as a practicing veterinarian in a rural community of northern England. Dr. Herriot does a marvelous job of conveying to the reader his love and compassion for animals, his work. the appreciation for the country surrounding him and his respect and enjoyment of the people involved in his veteri-nary practice. As I said before, everyone — animal lover, farmer, non- j pet owner, avid reader or ancone — will truly enjoy this warm and lovely book about a j man. his life’s work and the I work be loves. And without ’ trying to lecture or give statis- | tics, this author helps us to better understand people, appreciate our country, and have feeling for the creatures im this earth Worthless Money Dunng the Revolutionary ; war years, paper money became worthless But its value is picking up as the U S. Bicentennial draws near.
