Farm Wage Trend Narrows Gap With Nonfarm Pay

National average cash farm wages rose sharply, nearing the legal minimum for nonfarm workers, but the dollar gap between farm and nonfarm pay widened. The Agriculture Department reports average cash wages at $1.58 per hour, 28 cents above the $1.30 minimum for farm workers and 2 cents below the $1.60 nonfarm minimum. Piece rate pay could lift California wages by about 50 cents to $1.60, potentially narrowing the gap. Experts note piece-rate data is incomplete and may differ by region and job type, while overall farm wages have risen faster than industrial wages in recent years.
