Earl C. Dunham 74 of 1818 B avenue NE Cedar Rapids died Sunday after a lingering illness. Born May 22 1895 in Muscatine county he leaves daughter Vivian Myers and son Raymond Dunham of Cedar Rapids, 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Services at Beatty Beurle chapel 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with burial in Springville cemetery. Friends may call Beatty Beurle's after 7 p.m. Monday.

Safety Commissioner John Oberthien announced Cedar Rapids will apply to the U S Justice Department for federal funds to buy and gear a police training and recruiting mobile unit. The $15 000 tractor trailer and equipment would serve as a regional command post and provide recruit instruction and safety education for area schools. The seven county Linn Benton Jones Iowa Johnson Cedar and Washington region would use it at all times. Oberthien leads the regional advisory council with Iowa City Chief Patrick McCarney as vice president.
Swiss engineer Ralf Baldenweg described smuggling his 19 year old East German fiancée Friedl Linke 200 miles to freedom in a converted gasoline tank of his car. Across Hungary and Yugoslavia to Austria, the couple endured near death as the girl lay in a cramped gas tank with a tube. They hoped to marry in a month after meeting three years ago on Lake Balaton.
Miami AP report on Operation Stormfury tests Aug 18 20 seeding Hurricane Debbie with silver iodide to weaken the eye wall. Despite extensive aerial seedings by navy planes and other crews, Debbie showed no decisive change. Researchers note minor atmospheric changes may be natural and plan continued trials into 1971.
