Two Eastern Iowa men are recuperating from combat injuries in Vietnam and Colorado. Pfc. Thomas E. Veldhuizen remains hospitalized in Vietnam with an expected return to duty in about a month. Five others enlisted or were promoted, including several to second lieutenant and specialist ranks, with honors such as the Bronze Star and Purple Heart awarded to local servicemen earing Vietnam service.
In SAO PAULO Brazil a light airplane crashed into a living room through the roof. Two men escaped in a taxi while a third, posing as a mechanic, began smashing the aircraft with an ax. Firemen cut the plane’s motor and no serious injuries were reported.
Washington AP defense purchases in the year's first half were a smaller share of gross national product than since 1966. Assistant Secretary William Chartener said defense spending is losing its impact on the total economy and warned inflation may persist. George H. Harmer 82 of 2401 Bever Avenue SE Cedar Rapids died after long illness. He bought Calder's Van and Storage Co in 1915, served as president and GM until 1967, and belonged to several clubs and churches. Carolyn Pangburn died at Cedar Rapids age 75, a long time teacher with no immediate survivors. Warren F. Stewart 45 of Cedar Rapids died after long illness, survived by family. services pending. Elmer F Young of 1425 Thirty second Street NE died Tuesday after a short illness. Born January 16 1896 in Macomb Illinois he was a WWI veteran and musician with his own band and an accordion teacher before retiring. Survived by wife Emily Zezula a sister and a brother. Collins Radio Co reports that the S S Manhattan, the largest oil tanker in U S flag service, has started an unusual voyage to test transporting Alaskan north slope oil.
