Bell crafted draft that shaped parity nearly nine decades ago
The NFL draft began in 1936 after Philadelphia Eagles owner Bert Bell proposed a common draft. Nine men gathered at the Ritz Carlton in Philadelphia to implement a system where teams select college players in order of final standings. Bell stressed the draft would prevent domination by a few clubs and foster league balance, a view echoed by peers years later.
