Dayton campaign workers report the St. Beth hospital drive raised over 175000 in two days surpassing the quota by more than 60000. Catholic parishes and schools contributed 27995, with Rt Rev Monsignor Charles A Ertel and Rev Francis X Renneker leading that division.
The bells and historic clock are removed as a major renovation begins for the 1947 centennial. A new tower will blend with the church, interior redecoration includes lighting, vestibule and sanctuary remodeling, and sacristies updated. Sanctuary walls will gain wood paneling and altars will be renovated per liturgical rules.

Twenty five cadet nurses from St Elizabeth's hospital start a 12 week pre clinical course at the University of Dayton on July 2. They study anatomy microbiology chemistry physiology sociology and psychology with Dayton professors including Rev Charles Collins SM Dr Edward A Huth and others. The program ends July 22. Summer term enrollment exceeds 380 students with classes beginning June 18 and graduation set for August 12.
Charity sister Mary Alicia Kearney, aged 68, died January 19 at St. Joseph's orphanage in Cincinnati after 45 years in religious life. A funeral Mass was held June 21 at Sisters of Charity with Rev. Ban Koenig officiating. She previously served at schools in Cleveland, Albuquerque, and St. Patrick's in Cincinnati. Two brothers and two sisters survive.
The Rev. Malachy Farrell C.P., formerly of Holy Cross Cincinnati, is transferred to the Colored mission headquarters of the Passionist order in Ensley Alabama. Earlier he served as rector at St. Paul’s monastery in Detroit.
A series of six rural life institutes will be held in the archdiocese during the week of July 8. One for priests and five for sisters will be led by Rev. Joseph Urbain of Queen of Peace parish Millville with speakers from the National Catholic Rural Life conference. Morning talks, followed by group discussions and a closing panel, will cover topics including liturgy and rural life and parish cooperation.
