Shell Cap Injures Carthage Youth
Robert Davis, son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Davis of Carthage, was seriously injured when a shell cap exploded during play in the yard. A fragment pierced his left eye causing a deep eyeball cut. He received treatment from Dr Geo B McNabb and was later operated on at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and is recovering but face possible loss of sight.

The Navy Department announced six Indiana men graduated from the Ordnance Inspectors School at Washington Navy Yard with Ensign, USNR ranks. Local young man begins life in Navy
John P. Morris, 25, of Carthage, started Navy service September 12 at Great Lakes Illinois for a six week boot camp in seamanship and naval procedure. The program introduces the sailor life on dry land before trade school or active duty. Great Lakes, on Lake Michigan 40 miles north of Chicago, serves the Ninth Naval District with over 35 percent of Navy enlisted personnel.

Former Pastor Dies At Marion Indiana
Rev. Clifford Lester Shaw died Tuesday at his parents home in Marion Indiana after a heart ailment and dropsy. He had served the Wesleyan Methodist church on the Blue River circuit and recently took leave to recuperate. Funeral was Thursday at Nelson Street Wesleyan Church Marion with interment at Grant Memorial Park. Surviving are his widow Jose phine a son Clifford Eugene Shaw a daughter Oneida Joan Shaw three brothers two sisters and his parents.

Local justice of the peace heard three cases this week as Ed Schessler Russell Logan and Ralph McClurg faced fines for public intoxication reckless driving and speeding. Carthage Man Becomes Sergeant in 151st Infantry
Albert L. McClurg of Carthage Indiana is the first selectee to be promoted to sergeant in his own unit Company D 151st Infantry Regiment of the 38th Cyclone Division. He now oversees 38 vehicles for the battalion as Third Army war games unfold in central Louisiana under Major General Dan I Sultan. McClurg was drafted five months ago in April and has lived in Carthage for 18 years.
