Early Tomatoes Pay Off For Gardeners In Indiana

Purdue extension horticulturist W. B. Ward notes early tomatoes bring best prices and flavor. Plant strong transplants as soil warms, cover if frost threatens, and use starter fertilizer. Varieties include Early, Giant, Stokesdale, Stokes Cross, Valiant, Queens and Pritchard. Use stakes, harvest 40 to 45 days after transplant. Late varieties like Purdue 1361 or Kokomo sowed in May yield large fruit in fall.
