Social Security Q&A By Leslie Frazer

Letters discuss 1961 amendments affecting disability work credits and widow's benefits. Disability requires 20 quarters (five years) of coverage in the 10 years before disability. amendments ease some retirement and survivor rules. Widow benefits increases apply only after age 62 with a family maximum limiting payments. automatic increases occur if eligible. Other reader questions cover using benefits for an incapacitated uncle's care and funeral expenses, noting funds must be used for the beneficiary's support with any remaining amounts possibly aiding funeral costs.
