Mrs. Carolyn T. Terhune McCrum, granddaughter of James Terhune of Carthage, earned a Master of Arts degree from Butler University at Friday's graduation exercises. The McCrum couple, residents of Zionsville, are parents to three young children.
Mr and Mrs Unn Fitch and Mr and Mrs Foster Wilson and son of Carthage together with Mr and Mrs Tives Fitch and children from near Rushville spent the weekend at Silver Lake Indiana from Friday to Sunday.
Mrs. Elmer French was admitted to Rush Memorial Hospital this week for unspecified medical care.
Mr and Mrs Lowell Brown and children Linda and Jerry return ed home Saturday from a week at Lake Freeman. During their stay Mr and Mrs Charles Whitfield and children visited Wednesday and accompanied them to Dunes State Park on Thursday. The Browns enjoyed a Water Ski Show Friday at Indiana Beach Lake Shafer. Mrs Maude Barbour recently returned from six weeks visiting Wisconsin Waukegan Libertyville and Chicago. Mr and Mrs Herman Fett and Mrs Lenora Tatterdell of Illinois accompanied her home for a few days.
James Carroll and Tom Pearson, sons of local families, participate in a basketball camp at Taylor University in Upland Indiana this week. Mrs Ed Carroll accompanies the group along with Miss Deanna and Pat.
Rush County submits reorganization plans to the State Commission and makes copies available for inspection at the local library and the Civic Office.
Russell Reddick entered Rush Memorial Hospital on Wednesday for unspecified medical evaluation and treatment.
Mr and Mrs Guy Walden of Berkeley California arrived Wednesday for a two month visit with their daughter and family Mr and Mrs Lloyd Manuel and two sons They plan to visit relatives in Indiana Ohio and Virginia during the stay.
The stone company once owned by Fredmar on North East Street was reopened under new management. An Illinois firm led by Raymond Haverland becomes president with Syl Haverland as VP and Robert M. Knight as secretary treasurer. The Indiana Stone and Brick Company, Inc. will produce Marvel Stone and Brick precast products, splash blocks, patio squares, novelty blocks, and window sills.

Mr and Mrs Forrest Moore returned home Sunday from a ten day trip and vacation spent in Northern Michigan.
Thirty six reservations are on record for the Rush County Farm Educational Tour set for August 23 to 25. A large bus will be used and three seats remain on a first come basis. attendees will visit five farms in northwestern Indiana and three in northeastern Illinois including the Chicago Feeder Cattle Auction and the Purdue Swine Day program. Prospective riders should contact the Extension Office.
Joe Foust son of Mr and Mrs Carl Foust of near Carthage has completed medical laboratory and x ray technician training at Elkhart University and will join the International Ladies Garment Workers' Union mobile unit. The 50 by 8 foot vehicle houses an exam room x ray department lab and reception area with full utilities and a W wagon power supply. The unit will operate in the Midwest especially Missouri and southern Illinois under the St Louis Garment and Industry Medical Center with a physician supervisor. Foust will manage x ray and lab work drive the unit order supplies and ship films and reports to St Louis. He recently spent two weeks in training at Jewish Hospital St Louis.
Mr and Mrs Omer Heim and children of Carthage and Mr and Mrs Larry Morris and daughter Jerri Jan of near Willow Branch returned home last week from a week at the Heim Cottage at Lake Freeman. Gene Patterson Mike and Larry Heim and Eldon Jackson visited there a few days. Mr and Mrs Bob Nigh and sons spent the weekend at Lake Freeman at the Heim Cottage.
About 112400 gate admission tickets for the 1961 Indiana State Fair have been distributed to business concerns statewide for advance sale. Each ticket costs 50 cents in advance, admitting one adult or one car, with gate prices 75 cents for an adult or car and 50 cents per child. The Indiana Farm Bureau started the initiative on July 12 by purchasing 45000 advance sale tickets to distribute through its offices statewide.
Denny Miller of Rushville is spending the week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Elmore, visiting and staying as a guest at their residence.
Marvin Knoop announces the eight team league tournament to run Tuesday through Friday with Lannings vs Carthage and Fairland vs Arlington Tuesday. Wednesday matchups include Siebert's vs Bargain Barn and Glenwood vs Columbia. Semi finals Thursday and final Friday.
Three county teams will compete in the district softball event at Shelbyville plus four of six clubs hail from the Arlington Softball League. Friday's doubleheader has Carthage versus Greensburg and College Corner against Bargain Barn. Saturday Arlington faces Glenwood, with Friday winners meeting in the second game. Sunday hosts a final between Saturday winners. The semi state tourney follows at Shelbyville next week.
East Street Christian Church votes to add four Sunday School classrooms in a one story new unit extending west from the south end. A north side hallway links the spaces and provides access to the parking lot. The unit will have its own heating plant and blend with the existing architecture.
Mrs Phoebe Conaway 64 died suddenly Monday at home on R R 1 Carthage. Survived by husband Delmer a daughter Betty Jean Raesner New Palestine a son Russell Conaway two brothers Basil Moore Shelbyville and Glen Moore New Albany and one granddaughter. Services 2 p m Wednesday at Greenfield Chapel of Hendryx and Fields with burial in Park Cemetery Greenfield.
Jones named General Manager at the Anderson Indiana corrugat ed shipping container plant of Container Corporation of America. He previously led Mengel Company New Brunswick 1957 GM and served in World War II.
James Lumpkin, minister at the Little Blue River Church of Christ near here for three years, left last Monday to enter Clermont Graduate School in Clermont, California. He received his PhD from Butler University Theological Seminary last week. John Frump will be the new minister at Little Blue River Church.
Mr and Mrs Marcus McClurg visited Mr and Mrs Berry Manning and family near Knightstown Sunday evening. Mrs Ben Shankland of Kendalville spent Monday through Thursday with James Terhune.
Carthage High School routed Laurel 24 to 2 on the local diamond. Carthage exploded for 17 runs in the third inning and held the lead throughout. Jon Smith pitched four shutout innings before Acker finished, with two strikeouts and three hits allowed. Laurel’s pitcher fanned five but walked ten and gave up twelve hits. Notable Carthage hitters included Jackson, Heim, Smith, Stevens, and Weidner.
Carthage defeated Mays 10 to 4 in a five inning contest halted at dusk. Carthage scored in every inning, aided by 16 walks and 7 hits against Leisure and Custer while Smith and Acker limited Mays to 4 walks and 4 hits with 2 strikeouts.
Carthage graded teams beat Mays 7 4 on the losers field with Kim Lafuse earning a 4 hitter and 9 strikeouts. Ewing Porter Rucker and Kline led Carthage with multiple extra base hits as Mays pitchers Brooks and Nichols fanned few batters in a high scoring affair. Carthage made 3 errors to Mays 4.
Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Kesler hosted a buffet supper at their home near Arlington on Friday evening. The center table featured a blue four tier wedding cake. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Potts, Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Hutchinson, Mr. and Mrs. Oran Veatch, Mrs. Zelda Offutt, Mrs. Louise Wicker, bride-elect Miss Janet Veatch, and groom-elect Albert Weber. The couple-to-be will marry August 27 and received a wedding gift after games.
Wilbur Hardin, longtime Arlington principal since 1949 and former basketball coach 1949 65, resigned to become vice principal and director of guidance at Center Grove in Johnson County. He also chaired the county basketball tournament executive committee and is an Arlington Lions Club member. He and his wife and two sons live in Morristown. No successor named, announced by Posey Township Trustee Virgil Parks.
The Community Betterment Association announces two off street parking areas behind the Hamilton Barbershop and on Mrs. Ann Stager’s lot. Fresh gravel, planned outdoor lighting, and a future curb parking rule change aim to improve traffic and reduce hazards.
Purdue University reports 3438 students enrolled under the advance enrollment program for new students, mostly freshmen from Rush County. The plan runs June 26 to July 21, allowing early registration and mail payment, with orientation starting Sept. 10 and classes to begin Sept. 13. others not under the plan register Sept. 6 to 7.
Deputy Sheriff Max Safewright investigated a head on crash on a county highway two miles northwest of Arlington. Leslie E. Cole 33 of Carthage and Merle Kemple 52 of Arlington drove, Bruce Cole age 2 injured when his head struck the dash. Total damage 800 dollars.
Purdue economists report Indiana farm prices climbed four percent from mid July after an eight percent fall, led by higher hog prices. Purchasing power for Hoosier farmers rose four percent while U. S. farm prices up one percent. Hog prices up ten percent boosted the Indiana livestock index five percent. soybeans fell five percent. corn, wheat and oats up three percent. eggs up eleven percent.
Miss Barbara Foust and Miss Sue Siler spent a week at Riverdale Church Camp near Mitchell Indiana. They were accompanied by Mrs Carl Foust and Joe Foust who visited from Deputy Indiana and stopped at the Ball family home en route home Barbara stayed for an extra visit.
Indiana declares grey and fox squirrel season from August 15 to October 13 1961 with Sundays off. Daily bag limit five squirrels and a ban on sale purchase or offer to sell any fox or grey squirrel. Hunting in public parks state grounds is prohibited except in State and Federal Forests.
A hearing to zone Shafer and Freeman Lakes will be held at the Monticello Courthouse on August 17 1961. Shafer Lake hearing at 10 AM DST in the Circuit Court Room and Freeman Lake at 2 PM DST. The meetings will set zones for speed boating and water skiing and establish regulated speed limits in other lake areas.
Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Hunt and daughter Miss Pam Hunt returned to Carthage Wednesday afternoon after a week of vacation spent in Virginia Beach and Williamsburg Virginia.
One hundred twenty two Rush County 4 Hers left August 10 for camp at Hassmer Hill near Versailles. The itinerary includes first aid crafts swimming and recreation with 45 minute classes and junior leaders guiding activities. Camp ends with church services and a 3 PM return to the pavilion.
Richard A. Phillips of Rushville recently left an Indianapolis hospital to his home but was forced to return to the city again on Wednesday night.
Mr and Mrs James Geise attended the funeral for James G VanMeter in Indianapolis. Services were at Flanner Buchanan Fall Creek Mortuary with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery.
