Local Scout Mike Whitfield son of Mr and Mrs James Whitfield spent two weeks at Bear Creek Scout Camp Connersville as a member of the camp staff He earned a life saving merit badge a pro marksmanship medal in 22 rifle and a marksman medal in 22 shotgun He completed the camp pool mile swim finishing 71 lengths
Cub Scouts Den No 2 hiked through Henry Stingers woods east of Carthage last Wednesday and Thursday. Scoutmaster James Whitfield and den mother Mrs Whitfield joined the overnight camping trip with several scouts.
Joe Stevens of Carthage was moved from Rush Memorial Hospital to Irene Byron Hospital near Fort Wayne last Thursday. Mrs. John Stoner of Carthage moved from Rush Memorial Hospital to Robert Long Hospital in Indianapolis last week. Mrs. Fannie Clevidence remains at Jackson Nursing Home in Rushville. Caleb Marsh slowly improves at his home near Carthage.
Mr and Mrs Michael Harlin of Anderson announce the birth of a 9 lb Marcus James born last week in Anderson. Mrs Harlin formerly Patty Bailey lived with her sister Mrs Maurice Brooks and family formerly of Carthage.
About thirty guests attended the Murphy Heathco family reunion at Mrs. Pearl Davis's Raysville home. Ora Addison of Rushville was named president for the coming year. Local attendees included George Moore Kenneth Land Ralph Truitt and families from Carthage and Rushville along with guests from Indianapolis Alexandria and Knightstown.
Mr and Mrs William H Dixon and son Jerry returned home Sunday from a two week vacation spent in French Lick and West Baden Indiana visiting friends and relatives Several points of interest in southern Indiana were visited during their stay
Charles Mann of Carthage, a Navy Reserve member, will depart Friday night by air to Houston and then Galveston to join USS Wren DD 568 for two weeks of reserve training. He recently completed a two week session in Michigan.
The Carthage Garden Club and members families and guests will hold a carry in picnic dinner on Tuesday August 8 1961 at 6 pm at Pitts Ford.
A large Carthage crowd attended the Midnight Sale from 12 to 3 a.m. with many stores offering specials and free gifts. A local youth band performed in shifts as drawings at 1, 2, and 3 a.m. awarded prizes including a 17 jewel ladies wrist watch donated by Carthage Jewelry Store to Sally Bush.
Editors report the planned pictures for the Midnight Sale did not arrive in time. They will publish them next week if the images arrive.
Over a hundred anxious attendees stayed for the final drawing as 22 prizes were awarded including sugar, cash, merchandise certificates, household goods, a watch and a Frigidaire ice cube tray. The Carthage Better Business Association hosted the event with donations from local businesses.
Wm. Martin of the Soil Conservation Service released a year review for the Rush Conservation District. Highlights include 76 new cooperators covering 13 019 acres, 14 conservation plans totaling 2294 acres completed, 38 plans progressed, 1632 acres in conservation cropping, 487 acres cover crop, 1712 acres crop residue use, 53 acres plow partition, 22 acres new pasture, 6 acres tree planting, plus 12 acres land clearing and 32.9 miles tile drains on 152 farms, marking a large yearly increase.

Consolidated sales for Container Corporation of America for the quarter ended June 30 totaled 83.589 million, up from 83.327 million a year earlier. Net earnings dropped to 4.735 million from 5.265 million, 10.1 percent lower, with earnings per share at 43 cents versus 49 cents. Six months sales were 160.437 million, down 1 percent from 161.631 million. six month earnings were 8.846 million, down 11.4 percent to 81 cents per share from 92 cents. Chairman Wesley M. Dixon cited foreign sales up slightly but lower overall earnings due to currency restrictions and higher costs. He said cost reductions help but are not enough to offset price and labor increases. future results depend on industry volume and price trends. Dividends: 20 cents per common share on Aug 25 to record holders Aug 5. $1 per share on preferred stock payable Sept 1 to record holders Aug 18.
The East St. Christian Church social room held an Adult Bible Class event with about thirty members and guests dressed for a school day. Mrs. Helen Ruby led as School Marm. the evening included a flag salute, Lord's Prayer, singing, spelling, recitations, sack lunches, Cool-Aid, and a friendship circle finale.
Miss Janet Hunt led her Walnut Ridge Church Sunday School class on a Tuesday excursion to the Cincinnati Zoo and Whitewater State Park near Liberty Indiana. Attendees included Cathy Smith Cathy Todd Paula Ramsey Barbara Liggett Walter ONeal Lynn Ray Dwayne Ray Jack Brooks and Danny and Dave Hunt.
The Carthage Class of 1943 and families held their annual reunion and a pitch-in dinner at Riley Park Greenfield on Sunday. Afterward guests were hosted by Mr and Mrs Robert Barnhart and daughters in Greenfield.
Mr and Mrs Lloyd Manuel and their two sons visited Indianapolis last Wednesday showcasing family travel. The visit highlighted local attractions and the family's plans to return in the near future.
The Carthage Merchants Softball Team captured the County Softball tournament for the fourth straight year at Greenfield. They beat Cumberland 13 to 4 and Lannings 8 to 6 to reach the final, then defeated Greenfield 2 to 1. Rex Edwards homered to tie the game. winning pitcher was Tague.
A public hearing is set for Friday August 11 1961 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 602 State Office Building Indianapolis to discuss open hunting seasons on white tailed deer. Proposed bow season November 1 1961 to November 30 1961 and gun season November 23 1961 to November 30 1961. A special Crane Naval Ammunition Depot hunt is planned. Waterfowl regulations will also be discussed after the hearing. Biologists Barnes and Richardson will attend the Mississippi Flyway Council in St Louis to report on waterfowl breeding grounds. Merits of split season will be weighed against a continuous open season bag limits and other rules.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Mann and their sons of Morristown were Sunday guests of Mrs. Myrl Mann and Charles Mann. Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hampton were her parents Mr. and Mrs. Avery Stevenson of Springville Indiana.
Bill Windsor loses the beard he had kept for weeks after a call from Captain McCullough of Company K. Windsor refused to shave unless the Army paid his fine, but no funds were available. The Better Business Association offers to buy him a Non-Beard Growers License to placate the Defense Department.
Carroll H. Blanchar of Public Service Co. of Indiana warns taxpayers about a proposed 60.225 million dollar 35 year REA loan to Hoosier Cooperative Energy. He notes subsidies could reach 12.8 million in the first decade, accusing the plan of duplicating investor owned facilities and jeopardizing free enterprise. He cites Indiana’s 1,049 megawatt reserve capacity and urges public pressure on representatives.
About 30 members and guests attended the Friendly Circle event at the Friends Church on Tuesday. Linda Wells played a piano solo and a choral group performed with Maryin Edwards assisting on piano. Members included Mary Alice Sammons, Mary Patton, Lorinda Miekush, and Becky Wells. Rev. Herman Parker spoke on social activities in the church and the need for more church social involvement.
